At the age of 69, while many of my peers are contentedly enjoying their retirement, Barb and I have embarked on a new and unexpected journey: starting our own business.

Faced with the stark reality of an inadequate UK state pension, which barely covers our essential living expenses, I realised that to thrive—not just survive—we needed to seek alternative sources of income.

For most, the golden years symbolise leisure, relaxation, and the culmination of a lifetime of hard work. However, for us two codgers, it became apparent that the state pension alone would not sustain our financial needs nor fulfil our desire for a more enriching and active lifestyle.

Driven by necessity and a desire for independence, I began to explore my passions and skills that had been sidelined during my career. Determined to take control of our financial future, I’ve leveraged my love for crafting and my years of experience in sales and DIY to launch a small, home-based business.

This venture is not just about making money. For us, it’s about reigniting a sense of purpose and creativity that had been dormant for too long. So by leveraging my extensive network of contacts, deep knowledge, and rich experience, I’ve been able to create a viable source of income. This journey has shown me that age is not a barrier to entrepreneurship.

Our pensioner (aka penshuner) story is one of resilience and adaptability, showcasing how one individual’s quest for financial security can lead to newfound passions and opportunities. In an era where many face the financial and economic implications of longer life expectancy, our journey serves as an inspiring reminder that it’s never too late to discover new paths and take charge of one’s own destiny.
